Answers to Common Questions

Hushabye Nursery is a Center for Excellence for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome serving babies, their parents, and caregivers. Hushabye Nursery is here to support you and your baby with care, respect, and compassion.

Is this my fault? Did I cause this?

No. Substance use disorder is a medical condition. It is not a personal failure. What matters most is that you are here, seeking care and support for yourself and your baby. At Hushabye, we focus on healing, growth, and compassion.

What is Eat, Sleep, Console?

Eat, Sleep, Console is a gentle way to care for babies who were exposed to substances during
pregnancy. We focus on three simple questions:

  • Can your baby eat well?
  • Can your baby sleep comfortably?
  • Can your baby be comforted when upset?

Parents and caregivers are a very important part of this care. Holding, feeding, and staying close
help babies feel safe and calm. Many babies do well without medication. If medication is needed,
it is used carefully and only when necessary.

Will my baby be in pain from withdrawal?

Some babies may have withdrawal symptoms, but our goal is to keep your baby as comfortable as
possible. We use gentle care like holding,  swaddling, quiet spaces, and parent involvement to help babies feel calm and safe. Many babies do well without medication. If medication is needed, it is
used carefully and only when necessary.

Why is Hushabye different from a hospital or NICU?

Hushabye is designed to be calm, family-centered, and focused on comfort. Babies stay with their
parents in a quiet, home-like space, where holding, soothing, and connection are encouraged. We
use gentle, evidence-based care, and many babies do well without medication. We also have the
staff and resources to help you in your recovery throughout your stay. Our goal is to keep babies
comfortable while supporting parents and keeping families together.

Can I really help my baby?

Yes. You are the most important part of your baby’s healing.

Your voice, touch, and presence help your baby feel safe. We teach you simple ways to comfort
and care for your baby so you feel confident and supported.

What if I’m on medication for substance use?

Medication-assisted treatment is safe and supported. Many parents use medication as part of
recovery. Being on medication does not define you as a parent. We meet families where they are
and work closely with your healthcare team.

Will child services be involved if we come to Hushabye?

Coming to Hushabye Nursery does not automatically involve child services. Hushabye is a voluntary, supportive program focused on caring for your baby and supporting you as a parent.
In some situations, child services may already be involved for reasons outside of Hushabye. If that is
the case, our team works alongside you to support your family and help you understand what to
expect. Our role is to provide care, guidance, and advocacy—not to judge or report families for
seeking help.

How long will my baby stay at Hushabye?

Every baby is different. Most babies stay at Hushabye Nursery for about one week, but some may need a shorter or longer stay depending on how they are doing. Our team checks in with you daily and works with you to make sure your baby is comfortable and ready for the next step when it’s
time to go home.

What happens after we leave Hushabye?

After you leave Hushabye Nursery, our support does not end. Families are connected to outpatient
services, parenting support, and community resources that fit their needs. We help with follow-up care, answer questions, and stay connected during the weeks and months after discharge to
support your family’s continued healing and stability.

Why does Hushabye focus so much on parents?

Parents are a baby’s most important source of comfort. When parents are supported, babies feel
safer and settle more easily. At Hushabye Nursery, we focus on building confidence, connection,
and skills so parents feel empowered to care for their baby during their stay and after they go
home.
